Intevac Announces LIVAR® Long Range Camera Systems for Homeland Defense and Commercial Security Applications

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — BUSINESS WIRE — March 26, 2003

Intevac, Inc. (Nasdaq:IVAC) today announced it is offering long range camera systems based on its Laser Illuminated Viewing and Ranging (LIVAR®) technology for homeland defense and commercial security applications.

"There is a growing need to establish long-range surveillance for large outdoor and wide-perimeter areas, such as borders, ports, airports and water districts," said Chris Lane, general manager of Intevac's commercial imaging division. "Effective surveillance requires both the detection of possible threats, with systems like radar or forward-looking infra-red, and the investigation and positive identification of those possible threats. To meet the need for threat identification, we are offering extended-range LIVAR® camera systems suitable for both stationary and mobile applications that can provide the detailed imagery necessary to positively identify threats at ranges of up to 20 kilometers."

Intevac's LIVAR® technology is analogous to RADAR but with a number of improvements. The system works day or night, regardless of available light. The illuminator is an eye safe laser, rather than a microwave source, and the reflected signal is displayed as a digital video image, rather than as a blip. This enables real time, high-resolution imagery for threat identification at much longer ranges than was previously possible.

Kevin Fairbairn, Intevac chief executive officer, commented: "The critical technology in LIVAR®) is the extraordinarily sensitive imaging chip which was originally developed by Intevac under a cost-sharing Technology Development Agreement with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Initial applications of LIVAR® in next-generation military systems include the Airborne Laser under development by Lockheed Martin, a robotic surveillance vehicle under development by DRS Sensor Systems, and an upgrade to an existing major weapons platform."

Intevac will be exhibiting its LIVAR® and NightVista™ products from March 26 through March 28 at the International Security Conference West at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas.
